Preparation Guide
Before You Begin:
- Ensure printer is on a stable, level surface
- Clean the print bed thoroughly with isopropyl alcohol
- Heat the bed to 60°C for accurate leveling
- Heat the nozzle to 200°C to remove any filament residue
- Disable stepper motors from the printer menu
Why Bed Leveling is Critical
Proper bed leveling ensures the first layer adheres correctly, prevents warping, and produces high-quality prints. An unlevel bed is the most common cause of 3D printing failures.
Required Tools
| Essential Tool | A4 Paper or Feeler Gauge (0.1mm) |
| Adjustment Tool | Included Bed Leveling Knob Wrench |
| Cleaning Supplies | Isopropyl Alcohol (90%+) and Lint-free Cloth |
| Optional | Digital Calipers for Precision Measurement |
| Optional | BLTouch or CR-Touch Auto Leveling Sensor |
| Safety Equipment | Heat-resistant Gloves, Safety Glasses |
Printer Specifications
- Build Volume: 220 x 220 x 250 mm
- Bed Type: Carborundum Glass Plate
- Bed Leveling Points: 4-point manual leveling
- Nozzle Clearance: 0.1mm recommended gap
- Leveling Frequency: Every 5-10 prints or when changing beds
Step-by-Step Leveling Process
Step 1: Home All Axes
Navigate to "Prepare" → "Auto Home" on the Ender 3 V2 display. This moves the nozzle to the center of the bed at Z=0 position.
Step 2: Disable Steppers
Go to "Prepare" → "Disable Steppers" to freely move the print head and bed for manual adjustment.
Step 3: Position Nozzle
Manually move the nozzle to the front-left corner above the leveling screw. Use the display or move by hand carefully.
Step 4: Paper Test
Place a standard A4 paper between nozzle and bed. Adjust the leveling knob until you feel slight resistance when moving the paper.
Step 5: Repeat All Corners
Move to front-right, back-right, and back-left corners. Repeat the paper test at each location, adjusting the corresponding knob.
Step 6: Center Check
Return to the center and verify the paper has consistent resistance. Re-check all corners as adjusting one affects others.
Paper Test Technique Explained
Correct Resistance
Paper should slide with slight drag - you can feel friction but not tear the paper
Too Loose
Paper moves freely without resistance - bed is too far from nozzle
Too Tight
Paper doesn't move or tears - bed is too close to nozzle
Uneven Resistance
Different drag in different areas - bed is warped or unevenly leveled
Consistency Check
Test multiple spots in each quadrant - ensure entire area has uniform clearance
Final Verification
Print a single-layer test pattern to visually confirm perfect first layer adhesion
Troubleshooting
| Problem | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| Nozzle digging into bed | Bed too high, Z-offset incorrect | Lower all corners, check Z-offset in slicer settings |
| Filament not sticking | Bed too low, dirty surface, wrong temperature | Raise bed slightly, clean with alcohol, increase bed temp to 60°C |
| Uneven first layer | Bed not level, warped bed, inconsistent gap | Re-level all corners, use mesh leveling, consider glass bed |
| Corners perfect but center wrong | Warped bed, improper leveling technique | Use manual mesh leveling, consider BLTouch, check bed flatness |
| Leveling doesn't hold | Loose springs, worn leveling wheels | Upgrade to yellow springs, tighten eccentric nuts, replace wheels |
| Scratches on bed surface | Nozzle too close, debris on bed | Increase Z-offset, clean bed thoroughly before each print |
Common Error Signs & Solutions
- Elephant's Foot: First layer squished - Increase nozzle height by 0.05mm
- Stringy First Layer: Nozzle too high - Lower bed slightly at all corners
- Corner Lift: Uneven bed heating - Re-level at printing temperature
- Diagonal Lines: Bed not parallel to X-axis - Check gantry level and eccentric nuts
- Consistent Thin Spots: Warped bed - Use manual mesh leveling or upgrade bed
- Adhesion Only in Center: Concave bed - Lower center or raise corners slightly
