User Manual & Calibration Guide

3D Printer Bed Leveling

Preparation Guide

Tools Needed:

  • A4 paper or feeler gauge (0.1mm)
  • Allen wrench set
  • Isopropyl alcohol
  • Microfiber cloth
  • Spirit level (optional)

Pre-Leveling Checklist

  1. Clean Print Bed: Thoroughly clean the glass bed with isopropyl alcohol to remove any residue or oils.
  2. Preheat Printer: Preheat both bed and nozzle to printing temperatures (Bed: 60°C, Nozzle: 200°C).
  3. Home All Axes: Use the "Auto Home" function to position the nozzle at the starting point.
  4. Disable Steppers: Disable stepper motors to allow free movement of the print head.
  5. Check Hardware: Ensure all bolts and eccentric nuts are properly tightened on the printer frame.
  6. Prepare Leveling Paper: Cut a standard A4 paper to use as a feeler gauge for nozzle clearance.
  7. Clear Build Area: Remove any existing prints or debris from the build surface.
Warning: Always perform leveling with the printer at operating temperature to account for thermal expansion. Never level with cold components.

Leveling Steps

Paper Test Method

The paper test is the standard method for manual bed leveling. Use a standard A4 paper (approximately 0.1mm thick) to gauge the distance between nozzle and bed.

Four-Point Leveling

The Ender 3 V2 uses a four-point leveling system with spring-loaded adjustment knobs at each corner of the print bed for precise calibration.

Live Leveling Technique

Advanced technique where you level while printing a test pattern, allowing real-time adjustments for perfect first layer adhesion.

Mesh Leveling

After manual leveling, use the printer's firmware to create a mesh bed leveling profile that compensates for minor surface imperfections.

Step-by-Step Leveling Procedure

Step 1: Home Position

Auto home the printer, then disable steppers to move the print head freely to each corner.

Step 2: Front Left Corner

Move nozzle to front left corner. Adjust knob until paper has slight resistance when moved.

Step 3: Front Right Corner

Move to front right corner. Repeat adjustment with same paper resistance.

Step 4: Rear Right Corner

Move to rear right corner. Adjust to match other corners' resistance.

Step 5: Rear Left Corner

Move to rear left corner. Final adjustment completes the four-point level.

Step 6: Center Check

Check center point. All five points should have consistent paper resistance.

Leveling Test Print

  1. Download and slice a bed level test pattern (available on Creality website)
  2. Start print and observe first layer extrusion
  3. Make micro-adjustments during first layer if needed
  4. Perfect first layer should be smooth with no gaps or ridges

Troubleshooting

Problem Possible Cause Solution
Nozzle too close to bed Over-tightened leveling knobs, incorrect Z-offset Loosen all knobs, re-level with proper paper gap, check Z-offset setting
Nozzle too far from bed Under-tightened knobs, worn springs, incorrect Z-offset Tighten knobs evenly, replace springs if worn, adjust Z-offset
Uneven first layer Bed not level, warped bed, uneven springs Re-level all corners, use glass bed, replace springs with silicone spacers
Filament not sticking Dirty bed, incorrect temperature, poor leveling Clean with alcohol, adjust bed temp (60-70°C), re-level bed
Corner lifting Uneven cooling, poor adhesion, incorrect leveling Use brim, check corner leveling, ensure bed is clean
Leveling lost quickly Loose adjustment knobs, worn springs, vibration Tighten knobs after leveling, upgrade to silicone spacers, secure printer location

Common Error Indicators

  • First layer gaps: Nozzle too far from bed - Lower bed or adjust Z-offset
  • First layer transparent: Nozzle too close - Raise bed slightly
  • Uneven lines: Bed not level - Re-level all four corners
  • Filament curling: Nozzle too close or temperature too low - Adjust leveling and increase temp
  • Poor corner adhesion: Specific corner too low - Adjust that corner only
  • Center too high/low: Warped bed - Use mesh leveling or glass bed
